BACKGROUND OF THE AGRO-BUSINESS FOR SELF SUSTAINABILITY OF PASTORS PROJECT IN UGANDA
The word”Pastor” is derives from the Latin noun Pastor which means “shepherd” and is derived from the verb pascere ,”to lead to pasture, set to grazing, cause to eat”. The term “Pastor” also relates to the role of elder within the New Testament, and is synonymous with the biblical understanding of minister. Pastor is a spiritual overseer; especially in a clergyman serving as a minister in charge of a Christian church or congregation, especially in some non-episcopal churches such as Christian priests, ministers, pastors, and deacons. The Pastor Hood is ‘A mystery, Mystery is an incomprehensible intelligibility. This emerges from considering one’s God-given gifts and talents as well as life experiences. To be Pastor one has to discern a call, and also requires an honest look at one’s self and one’s abilities and questioning as well as confirmation from the community of faith some one’s personal behavior.
Any call must be weighed against the gifts one has been given and congregations in which the individual participates. As Pastors seek to discern God’s call, their focus would be not on how they want to serve, but on how God wants him/her to serve and enabling environment; not on where he/she want to serve but where God wants him/her to serve. All of these realities above invite us, as part of Pastors discernment, to consider the question: “Am I open to go wherever God calls me to serve?” Being open to go wherever God calls you, means being willing to serve anywhere but this needs other enabling factors like finances.
A Pastor no one knows what he hears, what he sees, the secret he must keep, the temptations he encounters, the tears he sheds, the sorrow he endures, the loneliness he manages, the lies levelled against him by some of the people he serves, how he accommodates those who pretend they love him but behind, they destroy him,how he tries to live more than human, The lack he suffers, The discrimination he must react to, the accusation he must mute at the expectations he strives to cope with, even a fellow Pastor does not know what others goes through yet, he is alive for God and un happy in life. Indeed unhappy Pastor is a disaster to the church of God, yet he is living in a community that is always test his faith. This project on Agro-business for self -sustainability of Pastors in Uganda is so relevant, promoting Agro-business for food security, nutrition and sustainable income opportunities for the Pastors/ Ministers once implemented will improve the standard of living among all ministers including Pastors.
The project area will be developing the modern meat sector in Uganda through mixed farming that will include piggery, poultry, cow, rabbit, fish, sheepand goat keeping. Added to that is crop husbandry that include among other Beans, Maize, red paper, Irish Potatoes and onions growing project for food security preparedness and marketing.
Mt Goshen International ministries areseeking a funding to facilitate the above project in purchased or released land. The expected yield is 3,000,000 kg of Irish potatoes; where 1,000,000 kgs will come from out growers and 3,000,000 kgs of onions. The project is to employ over 100 youths who are not employed.
Cash flow
The pay -back period of the project is in 2 years, actual repayment is 4 years. The net present value is positive. The internal rate of returns is positive at 30% the simple rate of return is 22%. The project has a short term period of repayment of 4 years in which it will be able to repay back all its investments which will be undertaken. The project is both short term, medium term and long term. The project on the modern meat sector in Uganda, through mixed farming thatincludes piggery, poultry, cow, rabbit, fish sheep and goat keeping, plus crop husbandry that includes among other Beans, Maize, red paper, Irish Potatoes and onions growing project for food security preparedness and marketing project
The project is on Agro-business for self-sustainability of Pastors in Uganda through promoting Agro-business for food security, nutrition and sustainable income opportunities for the pastors/ ministers. It will generate revenue and increase GDP, increase export revenue, therefore, socially desirable and commercially sustainable.
Background
Mt Goshen International Ministries is seeking financial support to set up Agro-business for self-sustainability of Pastors in Uganda through promoting Agro-business for food security, nutrition and sustainable income opportunities for the Pastors/ Ministers. The project will also eradicate poverty among the Pastors/Ministers; provide employment among the youth and sustainable development to other beneficiaries. This project wishes to purchase and rent acres of land to set up the project for mixed farming and process the product to an international standard so as to be accepted in the international export market. This project will assist other farmers in fifteen nations of Uganda to prepare them for Agro-business farming and produce that meet the international standards for export.
The crops to be grown such as Irish potatoes maize, beans, Onion etc and Animal farming for meat sector growth in the Uganda will increasing demand for meat, Ugandan farmers will develop the meat sector in the country through better production methods, and healthier animals. The goal in the meat Sector is that Ugandan meat producers will receive increased incomes and larger influence through playing a larger part in the value chain.
Farmers are not just going to deliver raw materials, but in the long term fully processed products to the consumer. At the same time will create a modern and sustainable meat industry that can supply the markets of Uganda and its neighboring countries and beyond.
These crops and meat products are on demand in the country and are also exportable under the non-traditional exports products. There are demands in Kenya, Rwanda, Southern Sudan and otherCOMESAstates. It should be noted that agriculture is the main stay of Uganda’s economy. 54% of GDP and 98% of export are derived from this sector. Finally, 89% of the population depends on it. Agricultural production is carried out on a myriad of small forms, using small labour and unskilled technology. This agriculture is rain fed; there is little extension and poor crop husbandry practices. In Uganda, there is minimal use of agricultural inputs and outputs (improved meat processing and packing, improved seeds, fertilisers, pesticides and technology).
This project would like to introduce Agro-business for Food Security, Nutrition and Sustainable Income Opportunities for the Pastors/ Ministers. The project area includes developing the Modern Meat Sector in Uganda by establishing mixed farming (Piggery, Poultry, Cow, Rabbit, Fish and Goat keeping) to support and improve livelihood of Pastors In Uganda planted area and production of food crops have shown market increase since 1987. The exceptional has been root crops like Irish potatoes mainly due to failure in production. This project intends to improve on export of roots like Irish potatoes, onions and promote organic farming for rural sustainable development.
In the past, Uganda used to export a wide range of agricultural products such as coffee, cotton, tea, tobacco, cocoa, cereals, pulse, oil seeds, vegetables, bananas, horticultural products, sisal, hides and skins. Irish potatoes, onions and red paper had not yet joined the market.
Additionally, Uganda used to export a number of processed and agro-industrial goods. Production and export of these commodities is minimal yet there is great potential for export and abundance of fertile land. Morden Agro-business farming products are needed as food to Uganda,Kenya, Rwanda, Southern Sudan, IGAD region, SADC region and COMESA and the rest of the world as a whole, because there is food deficiency in the region and the world.
Market analysis
Irish potatoes, maize, onionsare exotic foods in Uganda. They were introduced by foreigners who came to Uganda during the colonial era between 1900 and 1960. These crops were brought by the British colonial administration which took over the administration of Uganda after the British conference. Since 1900 when the British colonial administration took over the government in Uganda they brought with them Irish potatoes as a staple food, later adopted by the local indigenous population and its consumption increased greatly. Irish potatoes, maize, onions and paper have now become a supplementary food to the indigenous. Uganda is exporting food like maize and this project wants to add others like the Modern processed Meat, Irish potatoes and the like that will be a produced from mixed farming (Piggery, Poultry, Cow, Rabbit, Fish and Goat keeping) to support on the market and this will improve livelihood of Pastors/Ministers. The demand for these foods like Irish potatoes and products from processed meat are increasing nutrition and food security as most indigenous population regards them as exotic and are easily prepared and served.
It is against this background that Mt Goshen International Ministries wishes to implement a project on Agro-business for Food Security, Nutrition and Sustainable Income Opportunities for the Pastors/ Ministers by establishing mixed farming (Piggery, Poultry, Cow, Rabbit, Fish and Goat keeping) to for increased food production and marketing for export as well as sustainable income for stake holders. The project will also be extend to all parts of the country as time goes on capturing the Pastors/Ministers who want to start small scale businesses and out grower farmers who will also contribute to the capacity of export, employment opportunities and poverty eradication.
It should be noted that agriculture is the main stay of Uganda’s economy. 54% of GDP and 98% of export are derived from this sector. Finally, 89% of the population depends on it. Agricultural production is carried out on a myriad of small farms, using small labour and unskilled technology.
This agriculture is rain fed; there is little extension and poor crop husbandry and animal Husbandry practices. In Uganda, planted area and production of food crops have shown market increase since 1987. The exceptional has been root crops like Irish potatoes, onions, pepper and meat sector mainly due to failure in production. This project intends to improve on export of all the products as mentioned above.
As far as Meat Sector in Uganda is concerned growth in Ugandan middle class Pastors/Ministers demands an increase in income. This can be achieved by developing meat industry for sustainability. There is increased demand for meat of superior quality, so Pastors/Ministers in Mt Goshen international ministries working together with other Pastors in Uganda of other fraternity are working towards developing meat sector in the neighbouring countries and the world at large.
The Growth in the Ugandan middle class means that there is an increasing demand for meat of a superior quality to usual. Ugandan Pastors/Ministers farmers have worked to develop the meat sector in the country through better production methods, and healthier animals.
The goal is that Ugandan meat producers will receive increased incomes and larger influence through playing a larger part in the value chain. They are not just going to deliver raw materials, but in the long term fully processed products to the consumer. At the same time we wish to create a modern and sustainable meat industry that can supply the markets of Uganda and its neighboring countries.
Mt Goshen international ministries Agro Business for Mixed farming project will provide better practices for keeping livestock. Mt Goshen international ministries Agro Business for Mixed farming project will be an active member in the beef sector for developing systems for professional businesses. It will follow up the advancement and motivate the farmers to produce and deliver livestock. The farmers that are members will receive incentives through deals and payments. The project professionals and technocrats will afford to educate meat farmers so that they can work as role models for up and coming farmers. A resource center for beef will be established. It is going to work as a collection point for animals, there some are fed and others sent to the slaughterhouse. In addition the project will have a hub of advisors and membership services. The project will make sure that famers have access to the market and focus on the sustainable production of livestock for specific groups.
The project will increase farmer’s standard of living in that it will establish systems and gradually create an independent competitive and effective farming organization to give livestock farmers more income. In some areas because of draught it may be hard to receive livestock at the resource center, but this will be solved by finding different fodder for the trip. The biggest challenge with the project is to keep track of the payments required from farmers underdelivering compared to what they were to be paid. In spite of these challenges, the project willcontribute to predictability in the delivery of animals for slaughter, and to that effect the livestock farmers will have a better standard of living. Through working with quality, knowledge and professionals, the project shall achieve increased confidence in both the members and the market. As a result of this the farmers will be getting paid more for their livestock and all the services.
The project will start in 2021 and develop democratic organisation for meat producers through mixed farming and crop farming. The Umbrella organisation has 100 Pastors/Ministers, however will allow Membership association to participants and will create 2750 members and stronger Partner producers as associate members. The project will develop systems for professional businesses, whereby farmers will be followed up, advanced and motivated to produce and deliver livestock through better production methods and healthier animals.
GOAL OF THE PROJECT
The goal of the project is to improve nutrition and sustainable income to Ugandan Pastors/ministers.In here Ugandan Meat and crops producers will receive increased income and large influence through playing a large part in value chain. The project is not just going to a deliver raw material, but in the long term fully processed products to the consumers. At the same time Pastors wish to create a modern and sustainability meat industry and food processing packed industry that can supply the market of Uganda and world at large.
It is my considered view and believe, that God’s Spirit moves as the one seeks to discern God’s will. For those sensing God’s call to ministry as Pastors, discernment is not just between the individual and God, rather discernment is also within their faith.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
As Pastors seek to discern their call to the Ministry, remember the journey is taken not alone with God, but in the community of faith, a community that is called to challenge and affirm their gifts for ministry and support in the journey.
As Pastors discover the forms of ministry to which are called to serve and as they are called to the new forms which may take them to places they may have never asked or imagined, they haveface number of challenges that may be hindrances to affect their calling. The contemporary Pastors are caught in frightening spiritual and social tornadoes which are now ranging churches, no one knows where the next twister might touch down and how much value the storms will destroy. As results Pastors are asking themselves why ministries so tough today? Does Pastoral ministry make any difference in morally turbulent times and financial/ income sustainability? This is the big questions that the project ofAgro-business for self- sustainability of pastors in Uganda needs to address.
Society cannot flourish without Godly Pastors, but where are they with rampant poverty? How alarming for Christian reason when men and women of god feel forced to brood about the future of ministry as they watch their work get harder and their work grow more corrupt? Something has to be done? Pastors hazard are chocking hope out of Christian souls. They feel disenchanted, discouraged and often even outranged. Pastors squander energy on trivial matters and evil threatens to wreck their calling and fatigue shows in their eyes, worry slows their strides and vagueness dulls their preaching. Some Pastors consider their lives to be shadows of what they dreamed they would be, because many old formulas for ministry no longer work.
Poverty has been a hindrance to Pastors to affect their services yet this can be easily solved through modern mixed farming. Agriculture is the main stay of Uganda’s economy. 54% of GDP and 98% of exports are derived from this sector. Finally, 89% of the population depends on it. Agricultural production is carried out on a myriad of small forms, using small labour and unskilled technology. Irish Potato to point one element is an important crop for food and income generation in Uganda. Indeed, the Irish potato as indicated in the 2010/11-2014/15 Development Strategy and Investment Plan (DSIP) is a strategic commodity with the potential to make a remarkable contribution both to increasing rural incomes and livelihoods and to improving food and nutrition security. Animal husbandry is equally important
Despite its potential, intensification levels remain very low in the crop sub-sector and, translating into very low yields. Farmers increase production by expanding the land used to grow crops, not by intensifying their activity.
Agriculture remains one of the dominant sectors in Uganda in terms of its contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), generation of employment and export earnings as well as income. In 2010 the sector contributed nearly 28% to national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and approximately 24% of the country’s export earnings (Msambichaka et al., 2009). In addition, about 87% of the rural income is earned from agricultural activities. The importance of agriculture is also reflected in food security as over 70% of Ugandan population depends on subsistence agriculture for food production. The agricultural sector plays an important role in the Uganda’s economy and has the potential to advance the country’s objectives of economic growth and poverty reduction once given maximum attention mostly among the Pastors
